During the Munich Motor Show, Porsche presented its Mission R concept car, which is a glimpse into the electric future of its racing cars. It also gives a look at the next generation of road cars from Porsche.
The new Porsche Mission R is Porsche’s latest all-electric car and this time in the form of a GT race car, it effectively previews the future of Porsche GT racing but also hints at what future Porsche GTs will use as an engine.
The model features additional parts made of Natural Fiber Reinforced Plastic (NFRP) that produce 85% less CO2 than carbon fibers. Natural fiber material was used for the front splitter, side skirts, and diffuser.
The Mission R has two electric motors at the front and rear, which together produce 1,073 hp in Qualifying Mode and 680 hp in Racing Mode. The car is able to achieve 0-100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds while the top speed is limited to 300 km/h.
The 900-volt battery can be charged from 5-80% in just 15 minutes thanks to Porsche Turbo Charging technology.
The electric racing car features a new concept of rollover protection; It is a cage structure made of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) to protect the driver in the event of an accident. The cage covers the entire roof and can be seen from the outside through the transparent parts.
The exterior features natural fiber-reinforced plastic on the doors, front and rear wings, sills/side panels, and the vehicle’s rear midsection. The natural fibers are based on agriculturally produced flax fibers, which are as light as carbon fibers and provide toughness at a low weight of less than 10%.
Dubbed the “Exoskeleton” by the engineers who designed it, the carbon cage combines high driver protection capabilities with a lightweight and features some translucent surfaces as well as a removable driver escape hatch based on FIA requirements for racing vehicles.
The car is equipped with Porsche Advanced Aerodynamics (PAA) which can optimally adapt its characteristics to what the driver is doing on the track and the Drag Reduction System (DRS) consisting of three air intakes on each side and a two-section adjustable spoiler.
The Mission R is fitted with 18-inch magnesium central locking wheels, and the wheels are flow-optimized and consist of soft carbon five-spoke blades.
The model features a wire braking system with a controller to control the interaction between hydraulic and electric brakes known as mixed brakes. With a high output of up to 800 kW, the brakes are subjected to less load and their size can be reduced.
Porsche says the Mission R fuses esports with real-world racing because the carbon monocoque central chassis is designed as a self-contained unit, meaning drivers can theoretically work on their race lines in a simulator that accurately simulates the competition car’s environment. This seems like an interesting concept.
