Almost 15 years after the last one left the Porsche factory, this mid-engined carbon-fiber supercar is still getting hearts racing at a rapid clip. It caused a sensation when it was launched, and its timeless qualities and cutting-edge technology make it one of the best supercars to come out of the last 20 years.
Unforgettable
The Carrera GT was a car that pushed the technological boundaries of any supercar of its time. Its beautiful appearance included an astonishingly powerful 612bhp V10 engine that was a direct descendant of the 10-cylinder racing engine developed for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2000. The only modifications required for the racing engine were those to meet global emissions and noise regulations for road-legal cars. In keeping with its drive for innovation, the Carrera GT also pioneered the use of pure carbon fiber for its monocoque and subframe. Using carbon fiber for specific components and body sections has become a hallmark of modern Porsche – but the pursuit of lightweight construction has been part of Porsche’s heritage since the company’s founding.
